Glasses

November 6, 2010

The Khmer Rouge wanted to root out all foreign, class-based, capitalist, religious, and academic influences from Cambodia, in pursuit of a “pure” classless, agrarian Khmer society. Elites were especially targeted for death, including government officials, bankers, lawyers, doctors, professors, religious leaders, ethnic minorities, and city dwellers. According to the Khmer Rouge, glasses were a sign of intellectualism, and therefore a death sentence for those who could not see without them. When I see Cambodians wearing glasses now, it seems like a small act of resistance, of reclaiming the everyday.
