Violence is normalized

October 13, 2010
  • Case Study 1: A hand sticking out the trunk of a car is a Halloween prank, not a scary reminder of human trafficking close to home.
  • Case Study 2: One of the top songs in the country includes these lyrics: “If she ever tries to fucking leave again/ I’mma tie her to the bed/ And set the house on fire.”
  • Case Study 3: Parents have the choice to buy this “Harem Dancer” costume for their young daughters for Halloween this year. (Here’s a great explanation of why the harem stereotype is racist and violent.)
  • Case Study 4: A Comedy Central ad shows white male police officers sexually assaulting an injured (and bloody) woman lying on the ground outside a car crash, and a black man inside an ambulance — there’s no punchline, those are supposed to be the jokes.

These are just a few observations from the last few days.

More on all the wonderful parts of being in Boston with loved ones to come…
