It’s nearly noon, and they’ve been testing the speakers for three hours already. (I’m currently collecting data to support my theory of inverse correlation between the number of hours that speakers are tested and the likelihood that said speakers will actually work at showtime.) Yes, it’s time for another EVENT in Battambang – this time the national youth synod. Starting tonight, three hundred young people from all over the country will descend on Pet Yiey Chee for a few days of meetings, reflections, planning sessions, entertainment, and most importantly, the perfect opportunity to rok sonsa – find a sweetheart.
Me? Yes, I’m a youth too, over eighteen and not yet married. But I’m off today. First to Phnom Penh, to get a funky eye infection checked out. (Apparently this particular type of infection is caused by watching dogs have sex, as everyone I meet so helpfully reminds me between snickers and sincere questions about my health and well-being.) And then to Thailand, for a few days of rest and relaxation and reminiscing and rum drinks with one of my much missed college roommates. This trip is going to be 100% unplugged – no phone, no computer, no internet cafes, no speakers, and hopefully no withdrawal. Talk to you all next week!
