Apparently I’ve let myself go

March 5, 2010

A few minutes ago, our 2010 staff IDs arrived from Phnom Penh, with whatever passport picture we gave them for our visas. My photo was from the summer of 2008. When the people in my office saw it, here were the comments:

“You were so young and had such a nice face!”

“Why were you so beautiful before?”

“So pretty, because you were so thin.”

Here’s to letting myself go in Battambang.

just read this one from a while ago. here’s one to make you feel a little better: a couple weeks ago elizabeth and i were doing work at starbucks, after foolishly thinking we could comfortably sit in the park without freezing/ being pooped on by some pompous pup. elizabeth, per usual, had her hair beautifully curled, her lipstick flawlessly applied, and a beautiful white dress on that left little to the imagination. i, on the other hand, was wearing our elderly neighbor’s late wife’s plaid shirt and hadn’t showered in going on 48 hours, which i think is pretty acceptable considering the only social interaction i have all day is with dogs…and family that’s stuck with me no matter what i look like.
elizabeth and i are heading out after accomplishing nothing due to my undiagnosed attention deficit disorder, standing side by side, when a young artsy-looking man walks past me and stops my sister and says breathlessly, looking like he has just seen some heavenly creature, “may i just say, you look beautiful today.” i go home and shower.
