What did you start this year that you’re proud of?
Well, it didn’t take me long to pick a project from 2009, since I have spent the last year preparing to launch a women’s health advocacy and education program in Battambang, Cambodia.
I keep a (very infrequently updated) blog for work updates, which will have more as soon as I really begin my work next month. For now though, it’s where you can go to read more about our mission and specific programs.
In the next few weeks, we’ll start community visits to strengthen existing relationships with women. Most of our days will be spent in villages, hanging out and chatting with women. Soon after that, we will launch a series of workshops about different health issues, which will provide basic education, but more importantly, will create the space for us to hear from women about their health concerns and needs. From there, we’ll work with the women to figure out how our office can best support existing efforts to promote women’s health, or create new programs if necessary.
Theary and I are also working on workshops for youth about healthy relationships, consent, sexual decision-making, and safe sex. Our first workshop last week was on healthy communication and conflict resolution at a student center in Phnom Penh, and it went great!
Pretty soon, my blog will be including a lot more information about work, so stay tuned!
